Your Weekend Hit List ~ May 6th~8th

In LA, the first week of May also means it’s the unofficial first week of Summer. In a city that was BORN TO SUMMER!!!, we’re about to experience a total explosion of All Things Fun from now ’til September. So rev up your engines ’cause the Summer Party Train is taking off this weekend…and we’ve got your first stops right here. All aboard!!

A holdover from the Winter Concert Season, the second-to-last First Fridays at the Natural History Museum is happening this Friday. An awesomely unique night out, this KCRW-sponsored evening includes a behind-the-scenes tour of special collections, a moderated science talk, cocktails, food trucks, dj’s and live bands set amongst towering dinosaur bones. This Friday promises an epic line-up with Escondido headlining after Paul Bergmann and Korey Dane. But the big draw is Mr. Neil Young himself hosting a listening party of his upcoming new album, EARTH:

Against the backdrop of the Museum’s blossoming outdoor Nature Gardens, musician and icon Neil Young will present the first public playback of his upcoming release, EARTH, in its entirety in Pono high definition fidelity audio, before its June 17 release. The album features “After the Gold Rush,” “Vampire Blues,” and an explosive 29-minute version of “Love & Only Love,” and includes some unexpected accompaniment—the sounds of many different kinds of wildlife.

Neil Young AND T-Rex…?! These tickets will sell out faster than you can run from a velociraptor…so get on it!!

Friday Night Jazz at LACMA is just getting started. Now through November, you can enjoy a free jazz concert every Friday night at 6pm in the LACMA courtyard. Bring a blanket or chairs and nosh on a BYO picnic as you enjoy some of LA’s best jazz musicians under the stars. *HOT TIP: LA residents get free admission to the museum on Friday evenings 3pm-8pm, so come early and check out some art before enjoying the smooth tunes. One of LA’s classiest dates and you don’t even have to pay a single penny for it…get a-wooing, gents! You’re welcome.

It’s time to get spacey again this Friday at the Griffith Observatory’s All Space Considered. One of our absolute favorite free monthly offerings in the city, ASC is a lively, irreverent and informative space talk bringing you all the latest cosmic news the first Friday of each month at the Leonard Nimoy Event Horizon Theater. Catch the sunset beforehand from one of the best views in the city and stay awhile afterwards to take a peek through their telescopes at that great celestial show in the sky. Another great free LA date~hope you’re keeping track!

Summer outdoor movie madness is about to get into full swing! Get your al fresco film festing on this weekend with Dirty Dancing at Eat|See|Hear. This Saturday’s screening is at Santa Monica High School Memorial Greek Amphitheater. Seats are built-in concrete, so bring some pillows to make it comfy. An evening of live music, food trucks and one of the greatest films of ALL TIME…plus your dog is welcome to join in on the fun! This is the stuff LA dreams are made of! Be there. And bring your pooch!

Do you love Etsy? Are you a Pinterest junkie? Do the letters “DIY” set your pulse racing? Then be sure to hit up the Echo Park Craft Fair this weekend at Mack Sennett Studios. This bi-annual Crafticon is the premier city stop for all things homemade, house-made, handmade, artisan-made and sensitive-man-hands-made. (You know what I’m talking about. If you don’t, google search “Lumbersexual” real quick.) A great place to stock-pile gifts for the Holidays and make good on that promise to not leave your shopping ’til last minute again this year. It’s okay—you can use the “one for me, one for them” rule. Go get your crafty on!

The Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower peaks this weekend early Friday morning pre-dawn, but this month-long shower from the tail of Halley’s Comet will be throwing off stardust through the weekend. A new moon provides optimal viewing conditions. Get away from the city lights towards the North County Line beaches, deep into Topanga Canyon, out towards Acton and Canyon Country, or east towards the desert. We’re heading out to the Eastern Sierras with The Adventure Project for a secret mountain viewing party and will be reporting back!

Where to begin when there’s so much to do? Don’t choose—do it all!

Happy Weekending! And welcome, Summer!! ~love, Sirens & Scoundrels
